Letter to the Globe and Mail

Dear Editor,

On today's front page we learn about the sad killing of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan, with a poignant photograph and personal stories.

On page A13 a single small paragraph in the "In Brief" section tells us that NATO forces killed two Afghan civilians. There are no names, no pictures. Not even the age or gender of the victims.

  1. UK media saying it was a at least two (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7607137.stm) and a report on the scene said it was more.
The UK TV channels have often spoken to Afghans about their lives and the occupation, and about incidents such as this, so I don’t feel the UK media depersonalises Afghans in the way this story seems to; are there other media outlets that have a broader view in Canada?
